Explainer – Fabrican

Project Type

Research Paper

Date

December 2023

Role

Researcher
Graphic designer

The Brand
Fabrican is an innovative textile technology company that developed spray-on fabric - a revolutionary material that transforms from liquid to solid fabric instantly when sprayed on surfaces. Despite their groundbreaking technology, they struggled with brand awareness and communicating their value proposition effectively.

The Challenge
My task was to write a paper on something I found fascinating and explain the process behind it. I chose Fabrican because it lived in that perfect space between fashion and innovation. The tricky part was making sure I understood the science enough to explain it clearly. Fabrican uses cross-linking chemistry (which, spoiler alert, is a lot more complex than it sounds). It’s easy to get lost in the technical weeds, so my challenge was to make it readable and engaging without losing the substance.

The Solution
I started with what I knew—the dress moment. Then I worked backward, researching interviews, scientific articles, and the company’s own website. I focused on breaking down the process step-by-step: how the fibers are made, what binds them together, how it turns from liquid to fabric, and how it can be applied. I compared the process to things people already understand—like 3D printing or steeping tea—to make the concept feel more accessible. The goal was to explain something futuristic in a way that felt grounded and real.

The Impact
Writing about Fabrican helped me practice explaining technical ideas in a creative and human way. It wasn’t just about listing facts—it was about telling a story, asking why it matters, and connecting the innovation to something bigger. Beyond the runway, Fabrican has potential in medicine, space travel, and sustainability. This project gave me the chance to connect dots across disciplines and deliver a piece that felt both smart and readable.
